Have been thinking about moving to either the Wrangler or Grand, and, yes, I am even trying to give the new Cherokee a look.īut in the end, there is a decent chance I might just go for a late-'90s Cherokee Classic 4x4 in decent shape and reunite with my first true automotive love.Įditor's note: We're taking a few minutes this Memorial Day to remember the cars that got away. I am set to get rid of the Patriot this summer or fall. It just doesn't have the same soul, know what I mean? I've had two Liberties (we all make mistakes and occasionally repeat them) and currently own a Patriot, whose squarish body sort of reminds me of the old-school Cherokee. I look back now and realize my original Cherokee(s) and I were a match made in heaven. I have breathed in the Big Three - sorry, don't care that Detroit Three is the official term now - my whole life. I grew up in blue-collar Macomb County, Mich., in the Detroit suburbs. Pure American I6 strength in a simple go-to-work package. The fact that I don't recall many funny stories or mishaps with my '96 (or '99) Cherokee kind of underscores the beauty of the Jeep XJ in my mind. They wouldn't have done this to the darling Wrangler, so why the classic Cherokee?!? But I digress. I might give it a shot when it gets released in the next few months - take a test drive - but I am highly skeptical. Which is why the idea of owning a new Cherokee, with its relative curves and weird headlights, just doesn't have me jumping up and down. ) And since a Grand was way out of this college sophomore's price range, the sturdy, simple aesthetic beauty of the right-angle-laden Cherokee called to me. I remember proudly co-signing the lease with my dad, at the dealership where he and my mom had bought a Grand Cherokee not long before (probably when my Jeep obsession began. The Cherokee “replacement”!?! As if! (“ Wayne's World” reference for the 30-plus crowd.)Īnyway, I was a sophomore in college when I got my first Jeep product. Little did I know they would discontinue the Cherokee - never been able to figure that one out - for the aforementioned first-gen Liberty, which I never really liked (see: "gag" reference). I wish I had just bought either one instead of leasing. That one, a dark-blue '99 Cherokee Sport, was more befitting a then-recent U-M alum than my too-Spartan-green-looking '96 Classic. I don't think I had an in-dash CD player until my first Liberty (gag) with another Cherokee in between. Yes, this was so long ago, there was also a tape deck. It had a tape deck in which I would play the new release “ Vs.” from grunge hit-makers Pearl Jam - it was 1993, for the kids out there - but as for the car itself. In high school, I had a blue '89 Grand Am SE that my dad and I picked out at a used lot. I had owned other cars, but this was the first that I actually loved. There's some song, it's an old song - “you don't know what you got till it's gone, da da-da da, da-da-da da-da …” Well, that's how I feel about the 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic you see here.
